Well as far as I can see they *all* do it. I'm currently using my
netbook which has a very minimal xubuntu 11.04 installation and its
.xsession-errors is:-

    /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
    unable to find device KYE Traveler 350
    Warning: Only changing the first 32 of 12 buttons.
    Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_GB.
    Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default.
    /usr/bin/startxfce4: X server already running on display :0
    xrdb: "Xft.hinting" on line 13 overrides entry on line 6
    xrdb: "Xft.hintstyle" on line 14 overrides entry on line 7
    Warning: Only changing the first 32 of 12 buttons.
    ssh-agent is already running
    xfdesktop[6368]: starting up
    GNOME_KEYRING_CONTROL=/tmp/keyring-IDrzwm
    GNOME_KEYRING_CONTROL=/tmp/keyring-IDrzwm
    GNOME_KEYRING_CONTROL=/tmp/keyring-IDrzwm
    SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/keyring-IDrzwm/ssh
    Warning: Only changing the first 32 of 12 buttons.
    xfce4-settings-helper: Another instance is already running. Leaving...

    (polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:6408): polkit-gnome-1-WARNING **:
    Failed to register client: Th
    e name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service
    files
    /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/UpdateManager/SimpleGtkbuilderApp.py:35:
    GtkWarning: Ignoring the s
    eparator setting
      self.builder.add_from_file(path)

So the "/bin/startxfce4: X server already running on display :0" is here
too. This was, as I said, a pretty much out-of-the-box basic xubuntu
installation and I've added hardly anything to it. That second attempt
to start X comes with xubuntu, nothing to do with changes I've made.
Since it's basically symptomless I don't think anyone is bothered about
it.
