Work-around:  Create a custom action in Thunar ( Edit >> Configure 
Custom Actions... ).  The action command could be:

chmod 755 %f
	...or...
chmod ugo+x

Really anything along those lines.  However, custom actions in thunar do 
now work with all file types.
