Subject: [xubuntu-users] Installation issues in school lab.
Hello to the list.
I'm teacher and i've installed Xubuntu10.04 in two school labs .
1) 9 PCs : 256MB ,P4 adsl internet connection
2) 8 PCs : 756MB, P4 ,isdn internet connection
Overall i managed to have a usable lab with software suitable for my
students, and almost all hardware recognized (web camera, scanner, sound).
So a great thanks to foss community and xubuntu.
In the spirit of futher advance i want to share the tho major issues i
encountered:
a) in the isdn lab the installer was taking much much time possible
getting updates? , and i had to unplug network cable to have a cd-only
installation (with the intention to put apt-cache in the server)
b) in both labs the first time i booted ,almost in all PCs, the system
was extremely slow and according to system monitor more than 90% of ram
was in use! Strangely i'could find a process to justify that so i guess
the kernel must be responisible, but how ?
In the second reboot ram utilization dropped to normal levels of 120MB
most and system was usable again.
Thanks.
Alexander.
