They are essentially the same from the backend perspective.  One is 
running xfce4 as the desktop manager while the other is running Gnome. 
Its a matter of personal preference.  Also, you are not limited to xfce4 
or gnome from either.  For instance for 10.04 I had to install Ubuntu 
with the xubuntu-desktop package, which is essentially the same as 
installing Xubuntu.   (my DVD did not work for xubuntu for whatever reason).
