[xubuntu-users] grub2 un-reinstall

hi there,
I am running windows xp and xubuntu 9.10 on my notebook. now I begin 
considering to shift from xubuntu to ubuntu 9.10. my question is
how to replace one to another os leaving xp untouched. should i first 
uninstall grub2 then format xubuntu hd space for ubuntu?
the rason i am asking because i already have  had bad experience 
reinstalling xp after experiments with grub2.
