[xubuntu-users] Why would removing samba-commone remove xubuntu-desktop

xubuntu-desktop is a meta file, it just holds a list of files required for  
the xubuntu experience.  My suggestion is just to install it again when  
you’ve finished removing samba.  There’s a bit of a discussion about it
