I have this problem with my nvidia, and I noticed that it doesn't
appear when you disable agp (option "nvagp" 0 in the xorg.conf file).

This seems to be a hardware issue -- it sometimes doesn't happend when
the card's GPU is cold -- but when the computer was on for some time
and the GPU gets warm, enabling AGP hangs it every time.

Oh, but I coudn't switch virtual consoles when my computer hangs, so
it might just be that you have a resolution that is not handled by your
monitor set as default. In this case, doing 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure
xorg-server' and specyfying the correct values for horizontal and vertical
refresh should fix your problem.
