1) Yes, all the updates are compatible because Xubuntu is in fact Ubuntu but
with some tweaks ... think of it like "diet ubuntu" if you like.
2) Worst case scenario is that those applications will pull in some
gnome-lib dependencies and slow things down while the gnome-libs are taking
up system memory.
xfce.org is a good resource, but I recommend you check out www.xubuntu.org:)
