Well, as I said my modem is an old one.
However, in my experience, if nothing else works wvdial does. Yes it is
command line interface but so what? My wife is by now an expert of
opening a konsole window and type "sudo wvdial p" where p is for
powertel (we also have a very nonworking Econet config).
So I would install wvdial, insert the modem and wait a bit then run
"sudo wvdialconf" and then edit speed, password etc in /etc/wvdial.conf
