[Ubuntu-ZW] Ubuntu-zw Digest, Vol 63, Issue 2

I noticed a question concerning the Powertel modem. Right now Powertel is
offering the ZTE AC2726 Modem which comes with .deb installation file that
one can use in 32bit versions of Ubuntu. The deb file named crosplatfui
provides one with the user interface not unlike the one found in the
Windows driver installation.

Several caveats apply however:
1) Crossplatformui*.deb is not a Linux driver. The real driver is in the
kernel so it is possible to configure pppconfig( I use this method myself)
2) Crossplatformui*.deb contains a bug in its make file so that it is
unable to detect the version 3.0 kernels so it will throw up a warning in
dpkg during the installation process. It keeps trying to compile a driver
using obsolete kernel header files which are no longer shipped as part of
the kernel. As a result dpkg keeps throwing a -1 error every time you
install software. This is very harmless in itself and can be easily
remedied by deleting all the compillation related staff in the
crossplatformui postinst (post installation) file under the dpkg directory.
3) NetworkManager will not work at all with Powertel
Modems notwithstanding the fact that they appear in network manager.
4) Software Center has a bug which does not enable it to detect mobile
wireless connections. This results in the install button in
being grayed out. You can use a work around by using the file button and
selecting the install button. You will be better served by using synaptic/
apt/aptititude just open a terminal and install one of these.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.

Hope you find this helpful

Regards

Garikai
