Woah, hold on there. This is probably unnecessary. It sounds to me like 
a configuration/cache problem with Gnome Shell or Unity (which one are 
you using?) - I've had a similar issue on KDE a couple of times. 
Removing the offending configuration worked a charm, without needing to 
totally recreate the user and all the schlep that comes with it.
