Hey Jan,
Yes to all of those. Mint does run some of their own repositories, but
mostly piggyback on Ubuntu.
In terms of software compatibility, if you use the packages that you are
familiar with, i.e. Thunderbird, banshee or whichever, the usage is distro
independent. So you should be fully equipped to handle a mint based problem
using your skills refined in Ubuntu. In fact, you'll probably not be
completely lost on any Debian based machine.
