laptop has Nvidia GT geforce 540 m. I used bumblebee in past but now i
heard that they developed drivers for optimus techonolgy too. So my
question is , is it safe to install latest drivers from ubuntus repo or
additional drivers ?

Navdeep its totaly safe... problem you had could be related to the
window/desktop manager... kde used kdm last I checked, gnome, gdm and unity
uses ldm.

You should be able to choose wich you prefer even when using another window
manager, gnome will also work on kdm etc..
Hope that helped
