The real moral of this story is two things;
Go slow.
Have good backups!

I keep everything I really need in at least two places and keep them 
synced.  A by-directional rsync that copies and keeps only the newer 
version means an edit in either place sticks.  The fact that you still 
had your data safe means that while this was an inconvenience, it was 
not a Greek Tragedy. :)

And we all learned a little bit.  Curse that whitespace!
