Just a shot because this worked for me before:
a) Does the old /home/ drive automount?
b) If it does, does your new user have ownership of all the files in the
old /home/$username/ directory?
c) If all of the above are true, make backups of these files, and replace
them with files from the working user (tmp user) and make sure you have
ownership of them on the old (non working) /home/$user/;
.ICEauthority
.Xauthority
d) If still no joy also copy over /home/$testuser/.dbus/session-bus/$file
(there is a file in the session-bus directory that you can move over) to
the same place in your old /home.
MAKE BACKUPS OF THE FILES BEFORE YOU COPY OVER THE NEW ONES. I don't want
you to trash your login for your old install as well.
Regards.
