I don't think he needs to do this, I think he already saw that. It worked
before he changed the home directory.

Actually, you don't need to log out of Unity and use tty1.
First figure out what data you need to keep, and what is OK to lose. Typically
I don't mind losing my settings, but I want to keep my mail, and a lot of my
Firefox data. These days though between Firefox Sync and Chrome Sync you don't
even need to worry about that.
Once you've determined what data you need to keep, figure out where that data
is kept and backup that data. Then delete (or rename - safer) all the .
directories (except maybe your .ssh directory), restart your computer, and
then start settings things up again. This way you haven't lost any data, but
you can start your programs off a nice clean slate, and then just restore the
really important bits.
It takes a while, but it's a much better solution than obliterating everything
and reinstalling from scratch.
