Just an update:

I read the comments about ATI being bad for Linux , so I installed
a Nvidia card (always have one spare card).

I installed the Nvidia 310 proprietry, tested drivers and they work 
perfectly.
So my main problem is resolved. Guess I will avoid ATI too now.

(Can't remember who made the comment about ATI to credit. But thanx )
