[ubuntu-za] 3g trouble

Afternoon everyone ,

I am having a lot of issues with 3g. Currently my ADSL is down due to 
stolen Telkom cables.
So I went out and got me a 3g usb dongle (new one) so that I at least 
can read en send mail.

However , it is going very badly. It picked it up and I selected my home 
network etc. All that went
well , BUT , it doesn't stay connected longer than a few seconds :-(
I am still busy sending or receiving mail then it disconnects. All the 
time. Sometimes it is as few as about 10 seconds
then it disconnects. My signal varies between 2 and 3 bars , however my 
cellphone always have full signal and no issues.

Are there any settings in Ubuntu that I can do to make it more stable 
and actually stay connected long enough to use ?
Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit.
