Google gave a whole lot of hits on the problem but I don't seem to find a fix. I have tried various memory sticks and eventually got 10.04 installed (by mere luck no less, have the same problem with 10.04).
And that is what i experience too, though it does help if your dekstop
pc install and your laptop have a sata drive at least, also make sure to
burn your install cd's as slow as possible, even an hour spend here can
safe you a lot of headache in the future. though 4xspeed usually are
slow enough. for most.
That even helps writing other cd's

When working on a computer you have to know enough:
To fake what you don't know.
Google what you can't fake.
How (and when) to 'motivate' the computer to do what Google won't tell.
