Seems like there are good instructions here:

I'm guessing this will be fixed in the next usb-modeswitch-data release.

I'd avoid the betavine solution if possible, and go with
network-manager + usb-modeswitch.

Thanks Stefano. I've read that usb-modeswitch is included in Natty & the reference is pretty confusing (to me) but I'll try to help my friend using your recommendation.
