Ubuntu has the ability, at least in the current version (11.04), to select
the preferred application to open a file.
You right-click the file you want to open, then select "Open with other
application...", then select the preferred application - in your case "Open
Office Writer" (-for documents; Calc for spreadsheets, etc.) - then before
you click OK, check the box "Remember this application for '<file-type, eg.
ODF>' files"

Understandable, not all of us do; but kudos to you for sticking it out thus
far! I've encoutered much younger self-proclaimed computer literates that
wouldn't even try.

especially when I do not know what you are talking about in 50% of the terms

I also encounter unfamiliar terms often. I enjoy learning new things so I
look things up on the web very often.

I will look into your mail problem when I can. I'm leaving for Taiwan
tomorrow, so will only be able to properly investigate after I get back on
the 2nd of August.

I used thunderbird for a long time, but I'm mostly using gmail straight off
the web these days, and my work's web-based mail. I don't experience these
mail file issues anymore, but I have in the past.
Rest assured your mail is still there and accessible, and especially 'easy'
to transfer if your doing so from thunderbird to thunderbird.
One thing you might be missing is that .thunderbird folder may be hidden (as
are all files that are prefixed with a dot). To show hidden files & folders
in nautilus (file browser) click:
View menu -> Show hidden files (or press Ctrl+H); repeat to hide again.

Also, the folder might actually be called ".mozilla-thunderbird" vs. just
".thunderbird"

This is located in _your_ home folder (e.g. /home/your-username/). Simply
copying it to the home directory of the new user-account should do it.
However, if you've already started using thunderbird with the new account,
it might be a little more involved to integrate the two sets of emails,
although still possible... there would already be a new thunderbird
directory, and I'm unsure what would happen if you copy over it, as it will
contain files form both thunderbird directories
It would be a good idea to backup everything you want to keep before you try
anything more complicated, just to be safe, or if you want to be able to
delete any mistakes and start over, or restore it to the current state.

P.S. I've done both upgrades and fresh installs of 11.04 on 3 different PCs,
all were fine - still, others on the web seem to have had problems, so
no guarantees, I guess.

Kind Regards,
