Just after posting that horrendous lshw output I had the idea of
looking at the logs. I did a reboot and found this in the user.log:
May 20 11:01:31 Lucy pulseaudio[1264]: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to
write new data to the device, but there was actually nothing to write!
May 20 11:01:31 Lucy pulseaudio[1264]: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this
is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_hda_intel'. Please report this issue
to the ALSA developers.
May 20 11:01:31 Lucy pulseaudio[1264]: alsa-sink.c: We were woken up
with POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or
another value < min_avail.
(That is when I did the reboot)
May 20 11:04:50 Lucy pulseaudio[3659]: alsa-util.c: Disabling
timer-based scheduling because high-resolution timers are not
available from the kernel.
May 20 11:05:08 Lucy pulseaudio[3665]: alsa-util.c: Disabling
timer-based scheduling because high-resolution timers are not
available from the kernel.
I looked in messages log and found:
May 20 11:04:50 Lucy pulseaudio[3659]: alsa-util.c: Disabling
timer-based scheduling because high-resolution timers are not
available from the kernel.
May 20 11:05:08 Lucy pulseaudio[3665]: alsa-util.c: Disabling
timer-based scheduling because high-resolution timers are not
available from the kernel.
and in syslog:
May 20 11:04:50 Lucy rtkit-daemon[1266]: Sucessfully made thread 3660
of process 3659 (n/a) owned by '1000' RT at priority 5.
May 20 11:04:50 Lucy rtkit-daemon[1266]: Supervising 2 threads of 1
processes of 1 users.
May 20 11:04:51 Lucy kernel: [27299.424879] hub 5-2:1.0:
connect-debounce failed, port 2 disabled
May 20 11:04:53 Lucy kernel: [27301.352912] hub 5-2:1.0:
connect-debounce failed, port 2 disabled
(There are literally hundreds of this message over the past 24 hours -
the numbers in the [brackets] change.)
Do I have a bug or have I mucked up my configuration completely?
Bill
I don't know what all that means, but it don't look right.
