Thanks all for the much more ontrack suggestions. The problem is not
that we want to embed a file in a spreadsheet (Calc seems to do that
quite easily & well), but we need to  be able to access a file
(co-incidentally a .tif)  that was embedded using Excel - which
spreadsheet is now being manipulated in Calc. If the xls file is opened
in Excel, the embedded file is accessible (so it is "physically" there),
but we cannot access the embedded file in Calc.
