You all going to kick yourselves. Here is the solution which resolved
the problem which was obviously caused by gdm2login.
sudo gconftool-2 --direct --config-source
xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type Boolean --set
/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list True
This changes the behaviour of GDM. I now have to enter the user and the
password, but at least it works.
