Hi all,

Well, you know how it is with Ubuntu, installed some apps last night,
then was trying to make Virtualbox start as a session, and next thing,
I've got a problem with my login.

Login just freezes. I can start up in recovery mode and get in with
startx.

If I try to start system > admin > login screen it takes a while to
start, and then refuses to unlock.

This could be because I installed login screen 2, which I've now
removed. [I also installed byobu, but don't think this is the problem
because it only runs if I tell it to run. Uninstalled just to be safe.]

So culprit definitely login screen 2, or something to do with my trying
to execute vboxmanage from login.

Now trying to figure out how to restore my login.

Does anybody know how to start login screen in terminal?

Any ideas appreciated.

DRL

It may sound like a hassle, but before I do any upgrades or new
installations I always backup the partition using fsbackup on the
SystemResueCD. Only takes about 10-15 minutes, and reverting to the
original state is a trivial operation. I know that in this case it is
closing the stable door ...., but there will be other horses.

I have Back in Time installed, but this only for a catastrophic failure.

Guess I should sticky it and do a backup before I upgrade anything.

I actually did check to see if login screen 2 recommended for karmic and

it was, but obviously there was some conflict somewhere.

These things tend to happen the closer one gets to the next release. So
the advice coming out is always backwards compatible and people just
assume they can offer up another tweak. I probably should have backed up

the login settings completely.

Bad advice taken on a Friday evening, which is usually when this kind
of thing happens.

Probably was a Serbian giving out Ubuntu Linux advice on a blog
somewhere in Russia.

Yes, horse is out of the stable but have been in worse situations.

David

Um, I'm confused here... what's this "login screen 2" you're talking
about?

GDM, at least I think its GDM since so many things got deprecated in
Karmic.

You can try reconfigure login, I think it's the gdm package for Gnome
(correct me if I'm wrong?)

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

Digging deeper, I found the thread suggests commands that were
obsoleted,
and not so sure they exist anymore :/

I did find that dpkg has some force options, basically it turns
dependency
checks into warnings, so in theory they should not be processed. man
dpkg
and search 'force-things'.

dpkg --force-help also gives the manpage summary of the force options,
it
seems like a pretty vast section of package manager, i havent tried any
of
them just yet.

dpkg also has a --simulate option which could be useful here ;)

Tried but no luck. A step in right direction. Thanks.

I think it's got something to do with this posting:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/alternative-computing/linux-support/4288

nome.html

Either runlevel problem, or
bug either in usplash, i e need to turn off usplash. Will let you know
when I have more time to debug.

Okay, I think I've figured this one out. It was a corrupted gdm.conf
file.

I downgraded to gdm-2.0

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-downgrade-gnome-display-manager-2-28-to
-2-20-in-ubuntu-9-10-karmic.html

I can now login normally but get a warning message "invalid number of
arguments falling back to default session" when I login. Session happens

as per normal. Only hassle is the Jaunty login screen which I always
hated. Now I am going to try and upgrade again. Wish Back in Time had a
better interface for selecting exactly which part of the system needs to

be recovered, because I am sure there is an easier way to avoid this in
the first place. Never a dull day in Ubuntuland, that's for sure.
