It may sound like a hassle, but before I do any upgrades or new 
installations I always backup the partition using fsbackup on the 
SystemResueCD. Only takes about 10-15 minutes, and reverting to the 
original state is a trivial operation. I know that in this case it is 
closing the stable door ...., but there will be other horses.
