That error is usually because you try to run GUI apps as root without 
gksudo. Does this work? -->

darrel at point:~$ gksudo nautilus --no-desktop

Don't run sudo su first. It will cancel out gksudo. I'm sure there's a 
technical explanation on google somewhere.
