Hi Charl.

Ubuntu uses USplash <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/USplash>, and I bet
you can install this on Server and set it up to display your own screen.
Another, but outdated package
Splashy<http://splashy.alioth.debian.org/wiki/>is also a boot splash
manager.
Geexbox <http://geexbox.org/en/index.html> also has a custom boot splash, a
search on their forums didnt give specifics of what or how it's implemented,
I'm sure they could give some details.
I haven't done this myself, but hope this helps :)
