this one is important, quote from this site "I just upgraded my distribution from 9.04 to 9.10 and I was very confused when postgres suddenly decided not to work. Short story is that Postgres 8.4 configured itself to use port 5433 instead of 5432 probably because 8.3 is still using that port."
