9.10 still has HAL support, so your tablet might still work in Karmic :)

If you can get a separate hard drive, it's a great way to test your
hardware. A virtual machine is good for trying the OS, but it won't run
against your physical hardware, and won't give you a clear indication of h/w
compatibility.
