The modems contain a 'fake' CDROM that it mounts, that contains the setup
files. I think those are stored on a ROM chip so no you cannot format or
edit them.
I used usb modeswitch <http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/> in Ubuntu
8.10 to unmount this fake drive, which I needed to do in order to use the
modem. Karmic fixed this for me permanently :)
you have to compile the code (instructions on site) to get it working, but
if your modem works as is, perhaps not risk breaking it completely. unless
you like tinkering that is...
