I stand correct on one point:

When I use ssh tunnelling to access the internal web server on the ebox
it is unusably slow.

However, when I just use ssh to open a shell on the server it is pretty
quick!!

So how can somethings be fast and other things slow?  Please cover your
ears while I cry...
