what I normally do is:
* switch to my karmic sources.list
mv sources.list sources.list.jaunty
ln -s sources.list.karmic sources.list

* apt-get update
* apt-get dist-upgrade -d
this just downloads everything needed which is like 2-3GB for me
I start doing this at about RC time: every day when I get at work I start
downloading, it stops when I switch my laptop off when going home
but the next day I just start it again.
After a couple of weeks (slow internet :( ) I have everything and can do
* apt-get dist-upgrade
