One can take a normal sata disc plugged into a sata port on the mother
board (most chipsets now days support hot-swap) and use mdadm to
hot-swap it. Preferably you should make use of a hot-swap cage for your
sata disc's, then you will use mdadm first to remove the drive, once the
drive is removed via mdadm then you can physicaly remove the drive.
Replace the old drive with the new drive insert in back into the
hot-swap cage and use mdadm to add the drive and the rebuild will start
to take place.
