[ubuntu-za] Post intrepid 'no sound' problem - ALSA, PulseAudio, & drivers

When I upgraded to 8.10 I also experienced sound hassles.  What seems to
have worked for me is a kernel upgrade.  You'll be running a not-yet-stable
version, though, so take care.  I noticed this when I experimented with the
9.04 alpha and sound started working as expected.  Back on 8.10 and enabled
proposed updates and sound worked again.
