Well I'll be d...... -  mistaken for a four-eyed Geek perhaps.

I have just finished installing system updates (about 52 of the blighters
nogal). Still no sound.

Then I read your message. And so I looked again and checked all my settings
once more. The master sound control (the one next to the date) was muted. So
I un-muted it and - just like you - lo and behold suddenly there was sound.
(NO - it was not muted before!)

Thanks for your reply. If I hadn't read it, I probably would not have
thought of checking all the settings yet again!
