Indeed, it's nothing to do with fstab.

I had the same problem after upgrading from Dapper to Edgy.  The problem
is that the group is set wrongly on the device node - this has been
fixed now, but I suspect only in Feisty.

As of libgphoto2-2.2.1-9, udev and hotplug scripts will now use the
'plugdev' group instead of the 'camera' group.

If you're using a version older than that, try add yourself to the
'camera' group and see if you can access your camera?
