[ubuntu-za] SA Tees

I am keen to organize tees that have the SA ubuntu logo on, but don't know
if we made final decision on the logo?

Hi

Here in the student environment that I function in there is a t-shirt
for every occasion.

I've frequently wished that I could wear an ubuntu t-shirt or other form
of identification (I want to paint Ubuntu on the one side of my Gomoto
Motorbike).

Do we have access to such paraphernalia that we could begin to market?

Is there somebody who has experience in designing printing t-shirts? Do
we have some models that we could replicate? (if there is no stock
available)

Would other people be interested in acquiring something like this?

Perhaps we could do this as a loco-project.

Greetings

Weiers

There is now a Google Calendar event, and Google Map URL:

http://url.omnia.za.net/ubuntumeet
http://url.omnia.za.net/ubuntumeetmap

You'll need to have signed up for Google Calendar to add the event, of
course, but if you do, the nice folks at Google will SMS you before the
event to remind you ;-)

Hiya,

I have a nice stack of Edgy CDs, in order of most to least:
* Ubuntu 6.10 for your PC
* Kubuntu 6.10 for your PC
* Ubuntu 6.10 for your 64-bit PC
* Edubuntu 6.10 for your PC
* Kubuntu 6.10 for your 64-bit PC

At present these are available in Durbanville, but people who have
indicated they can distribute in the southern suburbs can ping the list
when they have collected from me...

Mail me directly to arrange a time to collect them.

Regards
Morgan

Good day,

I'm looking for a copy of Ubuntu 5.10 for an older machine I'm rebuilding
for my daughter.
If anyone in the Northern suburbs has a copy please drop me a note.

Tried to downloaded it a couple times and the download failed somewhere
towards the end.
With my monthly bandwidth almost depleted I took a trip to the Brackenfell
Pick and Pay in hopes the toaster would be back in place. As of today
there still isnt a toaster in Brackenfell.

So if anyone in the Northern Suburbs has a copy of 5.10 they could share
with me it would be greatly appreciated.

  Thanks a bunch,

  Rich

I don't have 5.10 but I have original CDs (1 x Installer & 1 x Live
CD) of Ubuntu 5.04 and if you want them they're yours. I'm in JHB.

Yes, why 5.10, especially considering that the End Of Life for support
for this distribution has just been announced a few minutes ago?

Just because it's an old machine doesn't mean it has to run old versions
of the software?

Yes, in fact, newer version of Xubuntu would be faster...

I agree with that however Xubuntu is pretty feature-less if you're
used to Ubuntu and the Gnome environment and that might be a driving
force to use an older version vs. a newer Xubuntu.

A meal is way too complicated for the first time - the politics involved
in who eats what, who is willing to pay what, and how many people are
actually going to show up (because you have to book a restaurant) is too
much. So, drinks it is.

I'm going to go with the Waterfront, since everybody knows where that
is. There's a place right in the middle, near the big flagpole, called
San Marcos, which does nice-ish cocktails, and isn't too hard to find.
I'll make/find/put up a map in a bit, if nobody has any better
suggestions or objections. (And if you have an objection, you'd better
have a better suggestion.)

> When?

Saturday, 21st April, 2pm onwards. If people want to move on to dinner
somewhere, they can organise it over the course of the afternoon face to
face.

Can we have a rough idea of who is interested?

I doubt an old version of Gnome would be very much faster at all.

Anyway, the real point here is that security updates and backports and
things are going to cease for 5.10 in April, it's been end-of-lifed -
better to go for the LTS version and keep getting updates?

Let's get our Gomoto's ubuntufied and airbrushed together. It would be
cool to have two Ubuntubikes in the wild :)

You can get Ubuntu t-shirts at http://www.cafepress.com/ubuntushop/

The reason for Ubuntu 5.10 is because the machines (there's two of them now)
I'm rebuilding for the kiddies are old and slow. P-II's with less then
200mb of Ram and 6 gb hard drives.

These systems meet the requirements of 5.10 To go with the latest
version just wouldn't be possible. There's always the option to install a
MS product on these machines but I would like to keep them open source.

Besides wanting to keep the machines open source I feel it would be a step
backwards to install 98 or 2000 Pro on them unless of course that would be
the better solution.

Anyway feedback or input from the group is appreciated,

  Rich

A google image search for ubuntu tshirts shows a few other designs.

See also these "official" shirts at an Ubuntu conference - I like the
brown colour - but then I also like Gnome...

I'd love a tshirt with "ubunut" in the ubuntu font :-)

As mentioned before, Ubuntu 5.10 won't really run much faster than a new
version of Ubuntu. The enhancements since Ubuntu 5.10 generally means
that the newer versions consume /less/ memory. For example, a bug in
gnome-terminal that has been solved now saves you ~500k RAM per tab.
That's quite significant.

I think you're better off using a new version of Xubuntu. It doesn't
have all the fancy stuff that gnome has, but kids find it usable and it
gives you a functional desktop environment.

just my 2c :)
