Hi,
I second this. The default kernels aren't vanilla kernels from upstream,
they are already patched in a really, really sane way, to support new
hardware.
I don't hold back with criticism of Ubuntu flavours, but with regard to
the default kernels I have absolutely nothing to criticise.
I think with the exception of Gene H. and me, myself and I, there won't
be many others who really have reasons to build exception kernels
themselves. Some might need a HWE kernel, but again, the default kernels
are already patched to support hardware that isn't supported by
upstream, aka kernel.org.
As usually mentioned by Liam, a firmware upgrade of the mobo sometimes
gains something.
As long as nothing is fishy, stay with the default kernel, IOW do not
use the HWE kernel and don't upgrade the firmware.
If something should be fishy, or if you have some special needs, such as
hard real-time, open a thread and asked for opinions.
Regards,
Ralf
