Avoiding HWE Kernel (22.04)

Unfortunately not: We have ca. 10 legacy computers (currently Scientific
Linux 7). Some of them will be reinstalled with Ubuntu 22.04, many of
them will be replaced.
For the new computers, they will likely be variations of the above,  but
we will (try to) reuse the NVIDIA GPUs (often GTX 1050 TI).

Any recommendations are appreciated.

I think my best bet is to try both on the computers (start with non-hwe)
and switch as necessary (see answer by Jeffrey)?
