I've always had much better luck staying away from directly connected
devices (print/scan) and going with network hosted devices. I've had a
range of these over the years and never had many issues (HP, Brother, Fuji
Xerox) on any OS. Maybe I've just been lucky?
My current office device is a Fuji Xerox 315z and works really well across
all functions. I even have it set up that at the press of a button on the
scanner it scans a document and drops it into a folder on my linux box in
one of a half of dozen file types so I never even have to rely on scanning
software.
It's a colour laser so a little more expensive to buy, but as you never
have to worry about ink clogging heads it just lasts forever.
