You can interface with this list using GMANE news instead. This is how I
interact with a lot of mail lists.
Check news.gmane.io with a newsreader and find gmane.linux.ubuntu.user in the
group list.

There is no such directory on my system....
And it is not a laptop either so it does not have a lid, nor does it have a
fixed connected display either.
