SOLVED:
I had her bring over her "official" Samsung USB charge cable. With
that, it connected with no trouble. I had been using a generic USB
cable - I forgot how picky Samsung phones can be.
With the official cable, I had no trouble connecting to the phone and
copying the photos.
I call that the Apple-Microsoft mentality- you have to do everything
OUR way or it won't work at all.
I shut down my Windows VM today because it was running an update for
ten minutes beating the crap out of the disk, and it still went on
with the beating for another five minutes before it finally shut down.
