It gets so far, but none of the Ctrl+Alt+F's work
only wa can get a a prompt is to go via "Advanced-Recovery-sud"

an oldish G8300 (according to ubuntu-drivers devices before I upgraded) I did
have a similar problem testing 21.04 (live) so I didn't install that
