The numbers are far lower now than for the Comadore 64 / Apple ][ / TRS-80 /
Ti-99 generation. When those 6502 / Z80 / 9900 machines came out there was a
whole generation of 10-13 year olds writing simple BASIC programs and this was
because all of these machines were BASIC-In-ROM machines -- they "booted" up
to a BASIC Ready prompt. These days computers boot up to a screen with a
launcher or menu with an assortment of ready-to-run programs and most of the
computers are completely devoid of any sort of programming tools or
environments out-of-the-box (yes, these things can generally be downloaded and
installed, but few people bother). Children are growing up without having any
exposure to computer programming and without this exposure they may *never*
discover their "inner hacker"...
