I have a very nice HP laptop running Ubuntu. Firmware updates take place
directly from the BIOS, over a network connection. I just plug the
laptop into an ethernet plug, press ESC at boot. Then F10 and select
update BIOS. No Windows or DOS required...

When vendors want to be Linux (or BSD or whatever you put on the machine
that is not Microsoft based) friendly, they can.
