That's great. I don't think I have ever even seen a machine _that_
smooth, but I've seen several that approach it.
• firmware update is an OS-neutral file that can be written to a
bootable DOS medium
• firmware update _is_ an image of a bootable medium
• firmware itself can read updates from removable media
And of course there are now a relatively few systems that can be
updated from within Linux.
You're right, it is happening. I am not sure it will ever come to
consumer kit, though.
For instance the difference between enterprise and consumer kit from
some vendors is very stark. HP and Lenovo are good examples of this,
in my experience.
