The writing style has always been like this, don't worry about this
inconsistency.
For pro-audio usage there are way more annoying pitfalls.
An issue could become the shortened names, snd_ice1. Is it 1712 or 1724?
One day the shortened form changed to this.
Apart from this it's possible to give audio cards unique names, but it
doesn't affect the MIDI part of the audio cards, so you could use two
1712 cards as MIDI IOs, but you can't auto-connect MIDI ports, since
both have the same name.
OTOH when I used 2 of those cards, the order (hw:n) was always the
same, perhaps due to the PCI port and/or assigned IRQ, but the MIDI
connections still had to be done manually.
[rocketmouse at archlinux ~]$ grep RTIRQ_NAME_LIST /etc/rtirq.conf | grep -v \#
RTIRQ_NAME_LIST="usb snd_hdsp snd_ice1"
[rocketmouse at archlinux ~]$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
# ALSA module ordering
options snd slots=snd_hdspm,snd_ice1712,snd_ice1712
