I don't know the answer to your direct question. But I have
discovered that the best solution is to reinstall the brother drivers
when facing similar problems. Rather than do each step manually, I
prefer to use the brother installation script found here:
https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc240c_all&os=128
