Blanked screen never returns

It seems to be a power management issue with the Graphics Adapter.
Searching for the model of the laptop, I found it has an nVidia chip.

Did you installed the proprietary drivers? Try installing the latest
available in the 'Additional Drivers' tab in  Software Sources.
